Hopefully, you've
found this page because you are looking for aftermarket battery cables
for Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, CJ or other Jeep vehicles.
The cable sets
below fits many late 90's Cherokees, Grand Cherokees. I think
this kit will probably work on just about any Jeep with the 4.0 inline
6 cylinder and the battery mounted in the right front corner of the
engine compartment with the fuse box on the right inner fender well.
If you're just
looking for one of those Jeep ground cables with the "Y" in it click
here.
The
cables are built from 1/0 ("one-aught") cable for the starter
and engine block ground. The heavier wire helps reduce voltage
drop so you get more power to the starter. After we crimp on
cast copper terminals with a 12 ton hydraulic crimper, we seal
the connection with heavy wall adhesive lined heat shrink.
The picture to the left is an actual stock cable from a 1997
Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.0L I-6. Compare the thickness of
the wires showing below the heat shrink. Note the heavy duty
adhesive lined heat shrink which helps prevent battery acid
and acid fumes from corroding the cables. Even the battery
bolt and nut are top shelf. The nut and bolt have an anti-corrosion
plating. All cables are also shipped with battery washers. |
All
the positive cables come with a starter lug cover. That's
because the oil filter on the 6 cylinder engine is directly
above the starter. The lug cover should help prevent an
accidental short circuit when changing the oil. Of course
you must install it properly and use caution when changing the
oil filter. Covers for the battery terminal ends are available
for an extra $5 each. |
The
fuse block wire is 4 gauge wire with a singe hole heavy duty
90 end. The wire is a heavier gauge than the factory wire
for reduced voltage drop. If you have the factory 2-hole connector
you may need to fabricate a jumper. Some guys just cut
the old connector off and use it for a jumper.
|
The
positive cable is a 40 inch long 1/0 cable with a 5/16 starter
lug and a 22 inch #4 lead with a 90 degree 5/16 heavy duty lug
for connecting to the fuse block. A starter lug cover
is included. The negative cable is 30 inch 1/0 w/16
lead for chassis ground. Please double check measurements
on your Jeep before ordering. I can't guarantee they are
right for your application. |

I run these same cables on my personal
1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. They work great. I think
the engine cranks faster and starts right up. I even noticed
the voltmeter on the dash is reading a little higher.
Of course, I didn't actually scientifically measure these before
and after (I wish I had) so it's more of a "feeling" than a
fact. I've sold a bunch of them with no returns
except for one when the customer specifically asked for a shorter
cable... and then returned it when it was too short.
If you think the cables would work better
with some modification, please help out the next guy and let
me know so I can make the change. If you find that these
cables will work for other applications, again, please let me
know.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Some minor modifications
are needed. These cables have a straight starter lug instead
of the molded starter/solenoid/cover combo. You will need to
reroute the positive cable. You will also need to cut
the solenoid wire and add a terminal to it. If your Jeep is
equipped with the negative "Y" cable, you will need to cut the
cable and install a #8 terminal on it. (Click ill need to cut
the cable and install a #8 terminal on it. (Click
here for details). The
#8 gauge 5/16 lug for modifying the negative "Y" cable, a new
lug for the starter wire and pieces of heat shrink are included.
Please allow 3 weeks
for us to assemble your order plus 2-3 days postage. You
should get an email when your order is shipped.

Extra Wire Option:
We can assemble your positive cable using
an extra wire battery terminal (see pic
here) for
an extra $4.95 (Note: the terminal cover may not fit correctly
with extra wire connected).
|
Military
Style battery Terminal Option:
Using the military (or "Universal") style terminals allows you to add as many
electrical accessories as you want. They also have the
advantage of being able to replace just the terminals and not
the entire cable. The down side is you must make sure that the
bolts remain tight and covers are not available. If you purchase
this option the set will come with heavy duty 3/8 lugs
and military style terminals instead of standard battery terminals.
